Gab has over 20 years of experience in Intellectual Property (IP) strategy & transactions, innovation management, technology & product strategy. In his current role, he is a trusted advisor to a wide range of UK and global clients on matters pertaining to IP protection, commercial exploitation, and risk management.

Focussing primarily on TMT and Financial Services industries, Gab provides strategic insight for translating complex issues into commercially meaningful strategies, helping clients build high-value IP portfolios and leveraging them as a strategic asset to drive revenue growth, competitive advantage, and risk mitigation.

Gab brings a wealth of expertise in the aspects pertaining to formulating and executing robust IP strategies, assessing and deploying effective IP management practices, and valuing and commercially exploiting IP assets.

Experience

Gab has spent 12 years in the world of IP. He has recently joined S&W following the acquisition of the IP advisory firm ClearViewIP, where – as Corporate Development Director – he was responsible for providing IP advice to clients, while managing relationships with vendors and partners. Prior to that, Gab was Director at the Deloitte Advisory Corporate Finance practice for 5 years, and, before that, was Head of Business Development in IP Licensing at BT for 7 years, where he led the identification, qualification, and valuation of IP licensing opportunities, developing an extensive expertise in patent portfolio management and analysis, value assessment, and damages estimation.

Before entering the IP world, Gab has spent 12 years holding roles in product strategy, R&D, and software development, working at Motorola and British Telecom. As a senior strategist, Gab was responsible for strategic investment in BT’s B2B Voice and Connectivity products. Prior to that, he led BT’s Networks R&D team, leading the development and assessment of new technology options to increase revenue and optimise costs. During this time, Gab has filed numerous patents and published several peer-reviewed papers. He started his career as Software Designer at Motorola Personal Communications, working on the design of 3G mobile devices.

Notable client work and achievements

In the Financial Services industry, Gab has advised numerous leading financial institutions and Fintechs, including Standard Chartered Bank, Visa, HSBC, Barclays, BNY Mellon, Interac, Weavr, and Moneris, helping them build up their IP portfolios, assess IP risk, and formulate commercial exploitation strategies.

In TMT, Gab has helped companies like BT, Adeia, and Nokia in developing new patent licensing programs, while helping companies like Micro Focus and TomTom in assessing IP risk and defending from IP enforcement. Gab has also advised Global Media in respect to the implications of an IP carve out.

In the mining and chemical industries, Gab has helped mining companies, such as Rio Tinto and Anglo American, and chemical companies, such as Johnson Matthey, identify their IP assets and assess and optimise their IP management practices.

In the retail industry, Gab has helped companies like Tier Mobility and Zwift assess IP risk in the context of the launch of new products, while helping the likes of Motorway, Photobox, Volvo Cars, and Polestar build up their patent portfolios.
