Experience

Chris is an experienced restructuring specialist who provides support to companies facing financial challenges. 

He focuses on working with management teams to identify options that address their issues, a process which often involves the review of business/turnaround plans and financial projections. 

Chris has significant experience in supporting businesses implement restructuring solutions, advising boards and managing stakeholders accordingly. This may require coordinating multi-disciplinary teams to deliver financial modelling, financial restructure, refinance, working capital and operational improvements or an accelerated exit/disposal of part the business. 

As a licensed insolvency practitioner Chris will take insolvency appointment in situations where a formal process is required to support a restructuring or exit process.

Typically Chris works with businesses with turnovers in the range of £5m to £300m and across a broad number of sectors including manufacturing, charity/not for profit, retail, property, infrastructure, education and healthcare.

Notable client work and achievements

Manufacturing: Advisor to the board of a manufacturing group on the wind down and disposal of an underperforming subsidiary. This resulted in the solvent disposal of the £25m turnover business through an accelerated sales process.

Charity/not for profit: Options analysis, contingency planning and liquidation of a £6m turnover not for profit organisation with overseas branches.

Retail: Business and options review for a £300m turnover travel agency to support a refinancing and debt restructure.

Property: Contingency planning and administrator of a group of 26 country house hotels supported by £300m of debt.

Infrastructure: Chris was personally appointed by a PLC to support the transfer of a substantial infrastructure asset to public ownership and the subsequent winddown of legacy operations. 

Automotive: Review of financial position, cash flow and performance improvement opportunities for a family-owned automotive retailer.

Education: Business review, options analysis and contingency planning for a distressed independent school.

Healthcare: Options analysis, contingency planning and subsequently appointed administrator of a care home group. The administrators continued to trade the homes which resulted in a successful disposal of the business and preservation of jobs. 

Professional qualifications/memberships

Chris is a Chartered Accountant and member of the Institute for Turnaround. He is also a Licenced Insolvency Practitioner (ICAEW) and fellow of R3.

S&W team comment on latest company insolvencies data for construction industry

New data published today by the Insolvency Service shows that there were 367 construction insolvencies in February 2025, the highest they have been since June 2024. This is a 20% increase from January 2025 (306) and 3% increase from February 2024 (355).

The team complete a sale of Utopia Distribution Services Limited to DP World Logistics UK Limited

On 13 December 2024, Mark Supperstone and Ben Woodthorpe were appointed as joint administrators to Utopia Distribution Services Limited (UDS or the ‘Company’), a physical entertainment distributor. Immediately following the appointment, a sale of the business and assets was completed to DP World Logistics UK Limited (‘DP World’), the supply chain solutions provider.
