Experience 

Josue Ortiz-Ramirez joined S&W through the acquisition of ClearViewIP Advisory Limited, an IP advisory boutique, Josue was a Founder and Managing Director. The ClearViewIP business had been been previously acquired by Deloitte, where it operated for five years as the Global IP Advisory centre of excellence. As one of Partners in the practice, Josue led the IP Transactions business and oversaw an IP deal corridor encompassing North America, UK, Northern Europe and Far East Asia. Prior to this Josue advised Coller Capital over several years in the monetisation of a large IP portfolio and ran his own independence IP transactions business for six years. Josue started his career at BTG plc in Philadelphia (acquired in 2019 by Boston Scientific) where he was responsible for developing and transferring into industry ground-breaking technologies, primarily in the TMT and Med Tech sectors, as well as advising on investment decisions of a joint venture fund that BTG set-up with a Canadian VC. Josue was part of the team that licensed and sold BTG’s physical sciences assets, including out of patent litigation, when the company pivoted to become a life sciences business.

Experience highlights:

  • Strategic IP advisor over several years to major publicly listed companies in the US, UK and Europe, including for example a major US media technology innovator, a UK mobile network operator, a diversified UK telecoms company, a Scandinavian Telecoms equipment manufacturer, and a Fortune 100 US industrial conglomerate. These client relationships included patent portfolio management and optimization, IP risk management, IP divestitures, IP acquisitions, IP strategy and the creation of new IP licensing verticals.
  • Advised a major publicly listed US technology company in the sale of a portfolio comprising 1500+ patents
  • Represented a UK publicly listed company in the securitization of an IP royalty stream.
  • Represented a European telecoms operator in the sale of multiple patent portfolios
  • Modelled the financial exposure of financial institutions to patent risks on behalf of a client with an innovative platform for trading IP rights.
  • Evaluated for a UK High Street bank the licensing income potential of a set of IP rights.
  • Advised a diversified Dutch technology company in the identification, evaluation and purchase of multiple standard essential patents from a Chinese telecom operator.
  • Evaluated for a major credit card company and for a large US bank the commercialization potential of multiple patent portfolios through a variety of monetisation strategies.
  • Advised a major publicly listed med tech company in the strategic options for an IP package related to robotic surgery.
  • Directed multiple IP due diligence engagements for a UK High Street bank.
  • Delivered multiple IP licensing agreements for two separate German consumer electronics start-ups, including with the largest market players in the US and the Far East.
  • Advised multiple European technology companies and financial institutions with regards to transfer pricing, focusing the work on high-granularity analysis of the underlying IP.
